Mark Cavendish sprint crash at the Tour de Suisse (Tour of Switzerland)

If you saw video of the sprint crash on stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse, it was ugly. It appeared as if Mark Cavendish changed his line and ran into Henrich Haussler – taking out Gerald Ciolek, Tom Boonen and others. However, after seeing the picture above it looks like the erratic move could have been caused by a bad front wheel. I’ve experienced a crash involving a taco’d front wheel . . .  and it is no fun. Get well to everyone involved and hopefully everyone is 100% in time for the Tour.

  1. Man I’m worried about Heinrich Haussler regardless of what caused it. True it’s stupid as hell that he was driving drunk (and got busted for it very publicly) but the guy has just come back off a hard break for the season and now he’s at the hospital. Sure hope he turns out OK, he’s one of my favorite new sprinters.

  2. I have rewound, and reviewed, and frame-by framed the crash.
Cav’s wheel did not fail. When Cav cut across, Haussler’s front wheel caused Cav’s to flex to 90 degrees, then it snapped back to true (amazing flexibility. Would have expected it to fail catastrophically.
